Seriously, who actually cares what Nora’s latest book is about? It’s enough she wrote it, so we read it and we love it. Blue Dahlia, however, will linger on after you finish. It’s centered around a garden business called (of course) In The Garden, and Harper House, the owner’s gracious, huge, haunted house! As usual with the first book of a trilogy Nora creates a close-knit community with characters you’ll blissfully care for, and who’ll carry through the three books most satisfactorily. In Blue Dahlia widow Stella Rothchild and her two young boys make a new start a couple of years after her husband is accidentally killed. She comes to In The Garden as a fairly uptight manager, lists, plans, inventory and all, but most of all with fresh hope and a huge desire to put down new, lasting roots. She instantly clashes with landscaper Logan Kitridge, whose laid-back easy Southern charm and stubbornness to conform to ‘her’ rules make Stella look prissy and anal-retentive. And so it begins. Layered behind Stella and Logan’s push-pull romance are those marvellous endearing characters – Stella’s boys will make you smile with their antics – and the ghost, who becomes increasingly agitated.
