| So you think you’ve ‘done’
vampires and stuff? Over it? Do us one little favour – try Dark Lover. These
are dark, dangerous, badass vampire heroes at their delicious best! And more to
come, yum. At first the names of these boys seem a bit pretentious: Wrath,
Rhage, Zsadist, Phury, Vishous and Tohrment. There’s also Butch, a terrific
human cop. A few pages into the book and you forget about the names – and in
fact, they suit the characters brilliantly. The basic story occurs when Wrath,
the last purebred vampire on the planet and, incidentally, their King, is
respectfully asked by his ‘brother’ Darius (who gets blown up by a car bomb) to
look out for Darius’s half-human daughter Beth. She’s got no idea who her father
is, and is about to ‘change’ and come unto her ‘heritage’. Okay, scene set.
Wrath and Beth, check. Superhuman romance, coming up! But that doesn’t even
begin to describe this other world, full of evil lessors who try to kill
vampires, and the personal torments each of the Brotherhood carries in their
soul. Wrath, for example, refuses to ascend to his rightful throne because he
blames himself – to a point – for his parent’s death. He thinks himself a
coward. Uh, hello, no! These boys have very wounded souls but they are
pure steel, testosterone on legs, plus awesome, terrifying warriors and
sexy, vulnerable lovers. Gasp. Convinced, yet? The whole complex mythology
behind this world is easily and brilliantly explained. Make sure you’ve got at
least the first two books when you sit down to read – anything less is
deprivation. |
