No sound troubled the silence. A drop of water formed on the sweaty surface of the Boone's Farm bottle and slid down its glistening side. Something large crawled along the hallway ceiling into the kitchen. I pretended not to see it. It stopped to the left of me and slightly behind, so I didn't have to pretend very hard. The intruder hesitated, turned, and anchored itself in the corner, where the ceiling met the wall. It sat there, fastened to the panelling by enormous yellow talons, still and silent like a gargoyle in full sunlight. I took a swig from the bottle and set it so I could see the creature's reflection. Nude and hairless, it didn't carry a single ounce of fat on its skeletal frame and every dry, hard cord of muscle was clearly visible beneath its taut pallid hide. Your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman.
It’s always
a huge thrill when a book turns out to be better than expected. We gulped this down in one sitting and went
on singing the praises of Ilona Andrews for the next few months. If you haven’t read her yet but are avid
supporters of Karen Chance, Laura Gillman, Kim Harrison and early Laurell K.
Hamilton, then run, don’t walk to grab this series and experience the fantastic
world built by Ilona Andrews. Kate’s a
mercenary in another Atlanta,
one where magic is a fact of life.
Although she’s got the talent, she’s managed to avoid the chains of The
Guild, but that all might change with some unwelcome news. Her mentor has been killed and Kate’s going
to have to work with the very people she’s spent a lifetime thumbing her nose
at, but hey, better the devil you know, right?
Kate might know more than most but that knowledge has warned her to stay
well away from the 2 warring factions of the magic world: he Pack and the
Vampires, but her investigations leads her slap into the middle of both and
soon everyone in town knows exactly who she is and they’re not all fans.
This
is dark, edgy, ugly, visceral, in turns creepy and humorous, but you won’t be
able to put it down. |
