For a great read, throw yourself into the murky underworld of 1897 London. This is Scotland Yard Inspector Mick Dunbar’s seething back yard. Think gaslight, fogs, and deadly, knife-edge mystery. This brilliant, tough man has been brought up on the streets, so he’s intimately aware of how the criminal mind works. Into his world pops genteel Sophie Haversham, a psychic who can read minds and see visions of the future. And she sees Mick’s bloody death… The author herself says: I knew Mick was going to be one of those logical, cynical, dot-the-i's-and-cross-the-t's heroes--you know, the kind of man that would be driven crazy by a heroine who talks about murders that haven't happened yet. Torn between his own hard, driving lust for Sophie, and a fear she’s ‘not so innocent’ with her knowledge of the ongoing, gruesome murders, Mick treads a difficult line. He’s desperately hunting a killer, the ‘Heart-Eater’, who’s shooting policemen in the head and then (shudder) ripping out and eating their hearts. He can’t – simply can’t – trust a flaky psychic and her visions. Then uncontrolled passion literally explodes between him and Sophie, and everything changes for this brooding hero. A moody, atmospheric, compelling read, terrific for Amanda Quick fans. |
