This is a freaky, tricksy, slip-slidey book. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on what’s going on, the plot twists and the world tilts. Excellent read, you never know what’s going to happen next! Heroine Katharine Lawrence is violently attacked in her own home by masked men demanding something her boyfriend’s hidden in the house. She’s got no idea what they want, and before her horrified eyes her best friend is shot dead, right before Katharine manages a Herculean escape. When she wakes up in hospital everything seems ‘wrong’ – even her image in the mirror.
This is where the ‘tricks’ mount up, folks, so follow the clues very carefully. What happens next is a terrifying cat-and-mouse hunt, with Katharine on the run, battered and clueless, not really knowing ‘who’ she is, and who’s the baddie or the goodie, including her CIA boyfriend! All she knows is that someone powerful and dangerous is after her – especially after a second vicious attack. She thinks good neighbour and doctor Dan Howard is a protective (and seriously gorgeous) goodie – but even that’s uncertain. Karen Robards is never raved about enough; she’s a brilliant author. This is a fast-paced book with life-and-death stakes and a – whoa, didn’t see that coming! ending. Lock the doors, you won’t be able to put it down.
A sample: …She flipped on the light. And froze. She was looking at her reflection in the big plate-glass mirror that covered most of the wall over the sink. At least, she knew it had to be her reflection because – a swift glance behind her confirmed it – there was no one else in the small, gray-tiled, steel-fixtured room. The thing was, though, the woman looking back at her – the stranger with the poleaxed expression and the IV unit teetering precariously beside her – was no one she recognized at all.
