In nineteenth-century Washington State, Jackson Underhill seeks Dr. Leah Mundy's help in saving his childhood friend, a woman who is hopelessly addicted to opium and suspected of murder. Leah assumes Jackson is married and fights her attraction to him, but when his "wife" is apparently killed, they turn to each other for comfort and Leah finds herself pregnant. Then Jackson's childhood friend reappears, threatening his new love and their unborn child.
