This book starts with a horrifying double murder fifteen years previously, then flips to the present where Julie Carlson’s murder is about to happen. Sid, Julie’s almost estranged husband, leaves the house in the middle of the night, as has become his habit. Suspecting he’s cheating on her, Julie slips out to follow him – and so, inadvertently, avoids her own murderer, waiting in the garden. A very eerie, creepy beginning, because you know someone is there, waiting and watching, desperate to follow orders and kill Julie. And whoever it is will enjoy the evil act far too much. In fact, they just can’t wait… Meanwhile Mac McQuarry, PI, and his partner Hinkle, are staking out the strip club the Pink Pussycat. In the interests of catching his client’s lying, cheating, pervert husband red-handed with his hands in the wrong cookie jar, Mac’s wearing a suitable disguise to catch the eye of said cheating husband. He’s in drag. A 6’4”, blonde-wigged, very buxom (all the better to hide your cell phone and gun in) drag queen in spike heels called Debbie. (I don’t want to hurt your feelings or anything, McQuarry, but you sure are one ugly-ass woman, says Hinkle, snickering and chortling.) When Julie Carlson’s Jaguar is stolen in the Pink Pussycat’s car park, Mac can’t help himself. It’s 6’4” Debbie to the rescue. Then he recognizes Julie. Former police, Mac and Hinkle were kicked off the Charleston police force when they ‘investigated’ Sid Carlson a little too closely, suspecting drug running and mob connections. When Julie employs Mac to ‘investigate’ her husband for infidelity, it’s the chance of a lifetime. The chance to legitimately dig a little deeper into someone he suspects is a crook and a murderer. But what begins as an already tricky assignment, laced with fiery flirtation, suddenly spirals into a harrowing race for survival as one attempted hit after another threatens Julie’s life. The action in this book never lets up until the last page. Hot, sexy, smouldering with lust and secrets and forbidden desire, the heat is well and truly turned up as the race to expose the truth trips over a maze of buried secrets and deadly lies. Just wait for the explosive climax! This is Karen Robards doing what she does best – a thrilling, dark, sexy romantic suspense, lightened with good humour and a poodle called Josephine who eats everything, including the walls. Karen is the author of one of Mirna’s favourite books, One Summer. For any reader addicted to dark, bad-boys, this book snaps and sizzles with testosterone, unresolved lust (which is resolved memorably) and a killer who has lay in wait all these years only to strike again. But really, you have got to read this book for the bad-boy redeemed. Johnny Harris is hot, hot, hot! Don’t miss Karen’s other taut romantic thrillers. |
