Forget the title. This is one book where you’ll cry more! Linda Howard tackles one of the most emotive situations ever: baby abduction. Milla Boone’s baby is torn away from her arms in a Mexican market. She fights for him so fiercely that she rips one of the abductor’s eyes out, but gets viciously knifed in the kidney and left for dead, her beautiful baby boy sent to the US for adoption. Ten years later Milla is still searching for her baby. She has never given up, and will not stop until she finds him. Her marriage ends from the strain of this single-minded search. She’s even founded a group called Finders, who help police find missing persons. Then, suddenly, she gets a hot tip about a man called Diaz, who may or may not have been involved in the baby smuggling ring.
Now there’s a man: He wasn't a huge man, but he was big enough, about six-one, maybe six-two, with a lean, hard build that said he was all muscle and strength, with a dash of rattlesnake quickness thrown in. He was darkness, a shadow filled with almost palpable menace. He had: a preternatural stillness about him, as if he wasn't quite human. One of the darkest heroes ever! Wait till you find out what he does for a living. His methods aren’t exactly pretty, but he uncovers more about the smuggling ring in a few weeks than Milla’s been able to find out in ten years. And the gasps keep coming: body organs are now the cash cows, and sometimes the donating bodies aren’t even dead yet.
The villains are appalling scum in this story, true monsters. Diaz will also shock you, especially in one violent scene of raw justice. And then he makes a mistake that emotionally crucifies Milla. The intensity of this book never lets up, from the first page to the last. It is a magnificent, shocking, intense read. The ending is spectacular, enough to reduce you to tears. |
