Butch’s turn, the human – and without giving away any spoilers, let’s just say
that boy oh boy oh boy – there’s a massive
surprise in this book which I was all – oh wow! gosh! fantastic! – about. Poor old Butch. He wants to be part of the
Brotherhood in the worst way – and yet he can’t, even though in the mortal
world he’s big and butch (ha!) and a total strong mean-ass cop. He yearns for
family, for belonging somewhere – and the flashback scenes we get with his
rotten abusive family made me want to give them a swift kick up the
you-know-what. There’s also a fair bit of despairing close brotherhood bonding
happening between Butch and Vishous (oh my) – and hello, where’s that heading? Ooh! In a terrifying fight Butch is captured and tortured by the lessors – vampire killers. But something
evil is left inside him, something black and horrible and – horrors! he thinks
he’s turning into a lessor himself,
especially when he performs a freaky inhaling-their-dust-until-they’re-dead
trick and bleeds black blood afterwards. Those scenes are heart-wrenching and
really up the yikes! factor. And yes,
Butch is still incredibly in love with Marissa, a vampire aristocrat. Their
story is amazing, and Marissa kicks butt like you wouldn’t believe - a total
change from the wimpy compliant Marissa in earlier books. |
