Gentle reader, Anita Blake is back and kicking some serious butt in this tenth addition in Laurell’s phenomenal series. Lock away your knives, guns, pets, children and significant others. This is, without a doubt, the bloodiest book in the series so far. Jean-Claude and Richard are back. There’s the usual assorted motley crew plus a whole host of wereleopards and wereswans and weresnakes and werelions and were-just about everything else. Nathaniel suddenly takes on a whole, new, elevated, sensual role. And there’s a new boy in town. A wereleopard who’s incredibly sensual and very eager to be part of Anita’s cosy little gang; and indeed, a permanent resident in her bed. He also happens to be very attracted to Jean-Claude as well, with the feeling reciprocated. Anita’s had six month away from her boys, and in this case absence has made the heart and body incredibly frustrated. Celibacy has made her crave them far more than usual and chastity is out the window with a bang! When the three come together and finally, finally merge their marks in an incredibly explosive scene, Anita’s suddenly given a taste of immortal ardeur, an erotic hunger she needs to feed to satisfy – all the time. Happily, her new significant others stick around to take the edge off her hunger. Read it and goggle. Added to this is a very real concern that Anita’s going to turn furry at full moon, due to a little accident during a fight. But a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. Her power grows, her ‘pack’ grows, her ardeur grows (blush, stammer), and Jean-Claude and Richard and a few others are still sniffing around. Laurell K Hamilton has pulled out all the stops with this book. Fur, fangs and feathers truly go flying. This is an erotic, bloody search for justice on the dark side of life. We dare you to start reading. We do maintain that Anita Blake would kick Buffy’s butt – and whether you love Buffy or hate her, Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter will blow your mind. Now if you are shaking your head, thinking no, no, no, these are not for me… think again! Mirna and Tina resisted these books for years – then, read the first eight in six days! If you are wondering what all the fuss is about, here’s a brief introduction that doesn’t do this excellent series justice. The books feature vampires (of course), zombies, werewolves, wererats, wereleopards, were-anything else, ghouls, ghosts, faeries, giant snakes (forget pitiful Amazon imitations, these are way beyond your biggest nightmare size snakes), human servants, voodoo, magic, demons, trolls, necromancers, you name it and I’m sure it was in it. It was almost a culture shock to leave it behind and read a ‘straight’ romance after happily wading the series. |
