If the mental image of Lula, the black, plus-sized, ‘underrealized’ ex-ho turned bounty hunter, wearing a small sparkly gold spandex dress, four-inch spike heels and a thong doesn’t make you choke in the first few pages of this book, nothing will! What a beginning! Thanks heavens for our yearly laugh injection from Janet Evanovich, teaming bounty hunter Stephanie Plum with her two favourite men – scary (in a good way), dark, secretive, muscular Ranger and long-suffering, sexy lean cop Joe Morelli. If you’re new to the series, dive on in. If you’re a long-time fan like most of us, welcome back Sally Sweet (remember him from Four To Score?) and Stephanie’s hilarious Grandma Mazur, up to her usual tricks prizing the lids of caskets at funeral parlour viewings, and doing her new thing strutting around like Mick Jagger with Sally Sweet and Lula in a rock band.
Amid the laughs, the doughnuts, the meatballs, pizza, and the usual perverts and suspects being apprehended, this book gets serious. Someone close to Ranger’s in terrible danger and everyone gets involved, Stephanie especially. Of course, she’s a bit annoyed when Ranger’s ‘wife’ shows up! Sure, Joe is theoretically Stephanie’s ‘boyfriend’, but that doesn’t mean she’s averse to some serious deep tongue kissing from Ranger. So what’s with the wife? Things take a decided turn for the worse – murders, bombs, stalkings, Ranger getting mad, Ranger and Morelli bonding, etc. …Okay, some funny bits there too with the two guys together. Still, wow! A rollicking read. If it wasn’t so gross, I’d say you’ll laugh till you wet yourself! New in paperback. |
