BET ME Jennifer Crusie

Finally in paperback, set a side a night and laugh your way through this witty, honest book on life, love and pet dogs.
At first you think Bet Me is going to be one of those ‘big misunderstanding’ books, where Calvin Morrisey accepts a $10,000 bet from Minerva Dobbs’ ex-boyfriend to get her into bed within a month. Yes, you read that right, $10,000. And of course you just know that he’s going to get her into bed, she’s going to learn about the bet, her heart will be broken, and all hell will break loose! Wrong! Well sure, it sort of starts out like that, but that’s about it. There’s nothing normal or predictable about this book. Drawn into the betting circle, so to speak, are Cal’s two friends and business partners, Min’s two girlfriends, her ex and Cal’s ex, and – well, heaps of other family and friends. The joy of Crusie is watching sane people make a fool of themselves, all done with wry, self-deprecating humour, friendship bonds that are priceless, food (oooooh, yes, the food), animals, and a cheerful thumbing of the nose at all that is sacred in society. Like no-carb diets, for example. Min is a plus-sized heroine and Cal loves every lush inch so much he tries to feed her up. Her joy of all the naughty, forbidden foods is orgasmic for her and him! Gotta love this guy, even when he unashamedly sneaks peeks at her lacy underwear down her top. He develops a shoe fetish, previously unknown until Min walked into his life with her do-me, believe-it-or-not shoes and peek-a-boo toes, and an enormous appreciation for tying her up so she can’t have her way with him too quickly. He has a bet to win/lose, and he’ll do it in his own time, thanks. There are so many excellent lines in this book that your head will reel, and so many sexy vibes your bones will melt. This is Crusie at her very irreverent best. $15.95
Never read Jennifer Crusie? Where have you been all these years! This lady is just divine!
Start with our favourite, Welcome to Temptation:
Welcome to Temptation
Jennifer uses the small town of Temptation to dish up another great story of murder, gossip, petty politics, blackmail, adultery, and scandal, with a decidedly erotic edge involving slightly perverse but really excellent sex. Sophie and Amy Dempsey drive to Temptation to produce a video documentary for aging film star Clea Whipple. But first impressions prove Temptation is not the norm for a small town. Firstly, the unusual water tower soars above the town, a huge phallic looking structure which continues to feature highly, with great humour, all through the book. Secondly, Sophie and Amy have a minor fender bender which leads to a run-in with single father Mayor Phineas Tucker. Now this guy has to be seen to be believed. Hoo-baby, take me I’m yours! Tall, sexy, challenging, Phin is a serious threat to Sophie’s singleness, which she doesn’t want to change. She might take him up on his great sex offer, though, as long as there’s no ties involved. So she decides to shoot the video, have great sex, and then get the hell out of Dodge. But the video seems to be taking longer and longer to get under way, and has also developed into – shock – potential porn. Watch for the scene where the film crew are doing a night shoot on a river dock. The words, I think we need a bigger dock, reminiscent of that famous scene in Jaws where the police chief first spots the shark from the small boat and says I think we need a bigger boat, are hilarious. Kinky, fun and fast, with more twists and turns than a fun-fair ride, this book will have you in stitches. It will also touch your heart. There are scenes where the girls talk ‘girl talk’. Poignant and frankly honest, the secrets revealed will cause a few tears to well. This book is guaranteed make you laugh and make you cry. Tender, beautiful, outrageous, sexy and kinky, with the best cast of ordinary people transformed into hilarious characters, each having their own mini-story to enjoy, this is one to read and savour again and again. Get your ice water and get your tissues and settle down for a complex, entertaining read. Specially priced, only $9.95, this is a book to give as a gift, have a back-up of for yourself, and certainly a book you have to read if you haven’t already!
Faking It
Davy Dempsey’s back! Crook, unforgettable rogue, extremely talented lover, Sophie’s brother from Welcome To Temptation is still leaving a trail of hearts and empty wallets behind him. Clea Whipple, AKA Clea Lewis, is also back. She’s embezzled a few million from Davy and he wants it back. Already I’m interested. Then Crusie throws in Matilda Goodnight, on the search for six illegal paintings she ‘forged’ in the name of another artist. Clea’s bought one and won’t return it, so Tilda decides to – er – steal it back. She meets Davy when she’s looking for the painting in Clea’s closet. He’s hiding there, waiting to hack into Clea’s computer to transfer his money back. What a beginning to a turbulent relationship, sealed with a naughty kiss in the dark! Jennifer Crusie gives us her whirly-bird look at life with a motley cast of slightly bent, very funny characters: a rebellious grandmother, a teenage goth turning Betty Blooper, a split personality mother, a gay father, a mysterious hitman, an FBI man masquerading as a caterer, a smarmy art collector, Steve the obligatory dog, and assorted others. …So what’s, um, ‘faked’? The paintings, of course. Oh, and Tilda ‘sort of’ fakes something else that Davy enthusiastically sets out to change.
And just because we like teasing – and torturing ourselves – here is a little taste of what to expect!
Matilda Goodnight stepped back from her latest mural and realized that of all the crimes she'd committed in her thirty-four years, painting the floor-to-ceiling reproduction of van Gogh's sunflowers on Clarissa Donnelly's dining room wall was the one that was going to send her to hell.
Like her previous books, Faking It has the requisite Jennifer Crusie dog. This one, Tilda decides, she is not going to have. “I am not going to rescue you, Tilda thought, capping her inhaler. I can't save everybody, I'm asthmatic, and I don't want a dog, especially not one who acts like he snorts coke and looks like he rolls in it.” $15.95
Tell me Lies
The opening sentences of this book certainly catch your instant attention: One hot August Thursday afternoon, Maddie Faraday reached under the front seat of her husband’s Cadillac and pulled out a pair of black lace underpants. They weren’t hers. Stricken, Maddie tries to calm down and be rational. What helps in this situation? Eat chocolate. Frantic, she attacks a frozen chocolate brownie from the freezer, hacking it with a knife, desperately toasting it and gnawing at its frozen edges. The answer to everything is always chocolate, when it’s all said and done. Anyway, as if things weren’t already complicated enough, her first secret love, sexy bad boy C.L. Sturgis is back in town and displays an obvious yen for her. What to do? Maddie wants to get even with her husband but she wants to keep her reputation too. Fantastic sex in the back seat of C.L.’s car is not going to help. Even if it is great sex and even if everyone finds out about it. Poor Maggie ends up trying to juggle Brent, her gossipy mother, her suddenly secretive best friend, her confused daughter, C.L., and the entire small town who’s thriving on all this deliciously unexpected and salacious gossip. When Brent suddenly disappears, Maggie becomes the focus of the scandal. Hot, sexy, and crazy, with the unmistakable Crusie domino style of this-this-this-this-this-this-that happens, Tell Me Lies is a wild roller coaster of a book and you never quite know where it’s going to end up. Take note of the relationship between Maggie and her daughter. Written with insight, this demonstrates a beautiful mother-daughter love during a very tricky time. Bravo, Jennifer. Oh, and C.J. is hot! $15.95
Crazy for You
Quinn McKenzie is living a perfectly normal and perfectly good life – a ‘beige’ life, she calls it. She’s got a good job as high school art teacher, she’s surrounded by family and friends who rely on her, she’s living with Bill, a nice guy, and – she’s bored to the point of insanity. Then Katie comes along, the sorriest looking excuse for a dog you ever did see. Against all objections Quinn decides she and Katie need each other, and she adopts this little rat on legs. Bill is not impressed and kicks Katie out. Quinn is equally not impressed with Bill for being so heartless, and leaves him. Love me, love my dog and all that. And so starts the hurdy-gurdy of hilarious events: dognapping, breaking and entering, seduction, sabotage, stalking, more secrets exposed than Quinn really wants to know about, and two men who are suddenly crazy … for her. Nick Ziegler, local mechanic, is of course totally unsuitable for her and she tells him to quit making big eyes at her, to stop kissing and groping her, even though it sure makes her hot. Hotter than hot. For goodness sake, she’s just gotten rid of Bill, although Bill seems to not want to be gotten rid of and keeps on turning up. Of course the events are well discussed in the local Upper Cut beauty salon, where Darla, her best friend (and Nick’s sister-in-law) works. These scenes are choc-a-block with classic, one-liner fun, and bring to life a gorgeous cast of women, complete with foibles, failures, and successes. Nick is in over his head with Quinn before he quite realizes what’s happening. Watching as the boys try to get their heads around things is hilarious. In fact, by the time you get to the end, so many things have happened you’re breathless. Suffice to say Katie the dog turns Quinn’s beige life on its ear. And Nick is the sexiest, hottest, most unexpected thing about it… $15.95
