There are so many special moments in this book, it’s hard to know where to start. Obviously, there’s a rake – Gideon, Lord Carradice, and isn’t he the most delicious, honey-tongued hero! He falls head over unexpected heels when Miss Prudence Merridew shows up in the house of his cousin (Edward, a duke), trying to wriggle out of a completely fabricated betrothal. Naughty Gideon poses as the duke – well, momentarily at least – and all sorts of deliciously forbidden things occur. In main, on the lounge, which is unfortunately shaped like Cleopatra’s barge. It’s all a tangle of lies and – for Gideon – marvellous fun. But it’s not much fun for Prudence, who’s run away from her frightfully abusive grandfather with her darling younger sisters, landing them all on their great-uncle’s doorstep. The villainous old grandfather will chill you to the bone. All the more need for our hero, and just watch him come to the rescue. There’s also a C.A.D. of the highest degree – you will bristle with indignation for his past with dear Prudence. Even cousin Edward gets his own sweet romance. But, oh! the clever parry-and-thrust dialogue between bad boy Gabriel and his little ImPrudence! The melting moments with Gideon! A romantic literary diamond of the first water! Here's a taste: What on earth could Gabriel be so pleased about? He must see by now that there was no room for him in the landau. She had rescued her beautiful sisters, had cleverly bundled them out of his way, with the assistance of his quiet, eminently respectable cousin the duke…and left herself alone with a rake with only a footman’s protection, she realized suddenly. Surely she could not be his prey? But there was a distinctly wolfish gleam in his smile as he helped Grace up the steps, a gleam that started a thrumming in Prudence’s blood. She remembered Cleopatra’s barge, and swallowed. She could not be alone with him…
