We’ve heard a lot of advance buzz about this debut Regency title and its one of our new authors to discover this month. Emma Brimley made one small fib in her application to the Pettibone School for Young Ladies: she claimed to be a widow. But when she arrives in Yorkshire, she is dismayed to learn that she’s expected to prepare her students for the intimacies of marriage - of which she knows nothing!
Her only hope of maintaining her place lies with the alluring Lord Nicholas Chambers, a neighbouring artist whose behaviour is scarcely consistent with that of a gentleman.
True to his reputation, “Lord Bedchambers” offers Emma a scandalous bargain: he will answer her questions about anatomy and bedroom etiquette, if she will pose for him - in the Grecian fashion. Though keenly aware of the dangers of such a scenario, Emma determines to best this noble roué never thinking she may be risking her heart as well.
A taste: “My model has abandoned me at a most inconvenient time.” He paused, then glanced at an empty canvas across the room. “No, I correct myself. At a time that is worse than inconvenient. At a catastrophic time.”
He raised his arm to a prominent burgundy velvet divan situated on a raised dais in the center of the room. “In her stead, a madwoman with a plea has assaulted my household to discuss… ” he glanced back at her - “what was it ... a book?”
He saluted her with his filled glass. “At this point, a stiff drink is about the only sensible course of action.” |
