It is 1349. Tristan Geraint returns his isolated property, Safere Manor, after eight long years overseas. In a dream-like scene he is greeted by an empty manor and a handmaid sitting in the garden, looking as though she’s been carved from marble. It is his wife’s cousin, Lily. It is a difficult and weary journey, fraught with illness, little money or provisions, terrible weather and hostile lands. People are wary of travellers because of the plague. They would rather steal from voyagers, or kill, than extend hospitality. Amarinth and Tristan form a cautious alliance, and, to his wary astonishment, Tristan finds himself falling in love with ‘Lily’. But Amarinth doesn’t dare trust his love. And then, in the turmoil of reaching Glynwallen, Tristan asks her to pose as Amarinth, his wife. The politics, secrets and trickery played out by his villainous brother demand an unwavering and united stance. It is a bittersweet time for Amarinth, falling in love with her husband for the second time. How long can she maintain her double charade?
