Dr. Harry Stratton Trevelyan. A kind of alpha yet nerdy scientist/expert in discerning whether the applications for Molly Abberwick’s science foundation grants are worth funding. One side of his family works in real estate; the other as carnies, flashy knife throwers, fortune tellers, people with second sight, and so on. Harry’s in the middle, with each side of the family asking him to sort out endless squabbles. He refuses to cut off either side of his family, even under pressure. He loves them all, and wishes they could tolerate each other. He’s also afraid to let himself go in his sex life. |

The best thing about this book is Luke Danner. He’s ex-Marine, politely refused employment in the family’s winery and instead runs a ‘lodge’ in Dunsley, California. He doesn’t really like the paying guests (some of the scenarios are hilarious), and has a list of rules as long as your arm. Basil Fawlty, move over!

| At first Dangerous Magic appears to be – guilty thrill here – such a politically incorrect romance it’s showing its age (published 1982 by JAK as Stephanie James). Aggressive new boss Wade Taggert accuses Elissa Sheldon of sleeping her way to the top, makes a pass at her (yikes), then says if she – uh, ‘accommodates’ him, she can maybe use him to get ahead! Double yikes! You wouldn’t take me into your world willingly, so I’m going to make a place for myself there, he growls, like the lone wolf he is. Today we’d shriek sexual harassment. Not to be treated like this our intrepid heroine fights back with her own plan – she’ll bring Wade to his knees then walk away, leaving him humiliated: He would grovel at her feet before she was through with him! Wow. Battle lines drawn, secret agendas written, counter attacks planned. Naturally, neither Wade nor Elissa count on falling in love, so when it hits hard, love wrecks all their plans: ‘Do you really love me?’ he asked on a thin note of steel and anguish. Ignore the stuff that wouldn’t get written today and simply enjoy the delicious parry and thrust from the sublime JAK! REISSUE |
